Mugwort

by Regan Schwartz

Artemisia vulgaris

Energetics: cool, dry, relaxant

Actions: stomachic, cholagogue, antispasmodic, stimulating relaxant, nervine, emmenagogue

I love watching Mugwort’s silvery leaves fluttering in the summer breeze in my garden.  While Mugwort is a fantastic bitter friend to the digestive system and a nervous restorative for exhausted bodies, I tend to work with it most in dream work.  Mugwort has an affinity for the digestive and reproductive systems and has a stimulating relaxant action that gets things moving.  Feeling stuck? Perhaps consider getting to know Mugwort.  Mugwort can also help to address headaches caused by tension and topically it draws blood to the area to nourish tissue and can provide antioxidant protection as well.

I work with Mugwort in tea, tincture, oil, salve, and in loose incense.  It is an integral part of my Rejuvenating Toner and my Goodnight Salve, where its affinity for dream support really shines.

Magically, Mugwort is associated with astral projection and dreamwork, protection, and women’s work.  It is ruled by the Moon and water which bring an affinity for the emotions that we see in its relaxant and nervine actions - magical and medical - botany and alchemy.

To top it off, Mugwort is easy to grow!  Consider tending a wild patch or inviting it into your garden (but be aware, it likes its space!).
